All these kids that Ive convinced to transfer have gone someplace and maybe played more minutes, and then some of these kids now and I have connected in the most positive way, just because now theyve looked back and seen that Ive treated them very well. In fact some are made so clear that on the first day of practice this August, theres some players that arent going to be practicing with us because they failed the initial test to get them into training, which is a beat test which measures their cardiovascular efficiency. What are our core values? Anson: I dont want to give speeches anymore. The truly extraordinary do something every day. So all these things are critical. language of the media and the world by saying you lead by example. I mean, I thought I could play for anyone. I just want to answer. And then she said, and this is a wonderful backhand compliment, she said, you know, after I played for you, I felt like a play for anyone. Anson: Melissa, its been a joy. And then we also have them evaluate every teammate on whether or not they were living each core value, and we did it on a 4 point scale, sort of like a GPA, so 4 is obviously a 4.0, its an A average, so 4 is an extraordinary example of this core value. So theres a line we draw. They have to get a sense of their relationship with you that you appreciate the fact they are different. I want them to win national championships. So heres my dream, and Ive stolen this entirely from Arthur Blank, so I want to credit him before I start bloviating about it. The girls you get to coach, and across college athletics, all the players that come through programs are going to move on at some point and join a workforce and work their way through and hopefully become leaders. We are not going to go back to elementary school and memorize poetry for this man. Other values are more inspiringthe truly extraordinary do something every day, we choose to be positive, and we care about each other as teammates and as human beings. I dont have to do a bloody thing except answer your questions. And then he patiently waits for, you know, this self-righteous CEO to finish and then he basically calmly says, well, if youd taken that energy that you invested in your bottom performer and you invested that in your top performers, your bottom line would be better. Ive worked with him and a year or two later, he was the best salesman at the company. And then after I had a collision with this player and her family that had me involved in a ten-year lawsuit, a girl I should have cut in the preseason of her freshman year and it would have solved all kinds of problems a couple of years later, when I finally did cut her, Ive now learned it. And for me, because talent is so attractive and because you look at talent and you think I have taken that talent to a world championship or an Olympic gold medal, I have to sign that kid, and all of a sudden they come in and theyre toxic, and then yeah, youre playing them, but, you know, you dont know if playing them is helping you or hurting you because everyone hates them, everyone hates playing with them even though they are good players. 00:10:54 SHARE SAVE MORE Anson Dorrance - Building A Serial Winner Where Others Won't 12 Core Values of a Stellar Team. Because hopefully they will find someone eventually that theyre going to enjoy working for, and a culture they willfully support, and youre actually doing them a favor. I get to watch one of the greatest coaches of all time in any sport run his sessions. We are some of the best students in the world. I looked down at this thing and I was stunned. But theres some that arent going to make it, and they just, they dont believe it. He would say every one of you guys are underpaying HR. So every kid comes in with a personal narrative that protects them from pain and accountability. So what we did is we took our 12 core values and we assigned a motivational quote attached to each one, and we ask every one of our players to memorize all of these motivational quotes attached to each core value. And let me tell you something. So Anson, you are quite an accomplished man and Im sure have lots of great insights to share with us. And basically you have a strong man running everything. Dorrance challenges his players to commit to accomplishing something greatfor the team and for themselvesand following a set of common values has helped to create a winning culture. Ill give you my favorite example. And Im thinking great, well have all these core values. That warm Carolina night, he blessed us with pearls of wisdom. They get to see exactly where they are on it. No one tells us that. So part of this is you as a leader, investing the time consuming, but Ill tell you an incredibly rich thing about relationships. In the performance review a lot of the review is done by themselves, because what most of us have is we all develop a personal narrative. And all of a sudden, at the end of the practice, the assistant managers with their clipboards sprint to the scores table, and there at the scores table is the head manager, and hes grabbing this stuff from all of his associates. And we had alerts towards authoritarianism, and it was Donald Trump. And I think companies and managers are trying to figure out how to identify the right data at the right time and present it in the right ways. So basically thats the construction of our player conference, which takes me out of the subjective mode. Paraphrase, and obviously were bringing in our culture. One of the most destructive things in athletics are the whiners. The coach hates me. Theyre just whining and whining about everything under the sun. Under some delusion that these parents have, they think that by trying to raise their children with this idea of self-esteem or their praise for everyone, which is a part of the culture where everyone gets a trophy, they have eliminated standards for their own children.
